For those who have never undergone any orthodontic treatment, there is a lot of gray area surrounding the topic. With so many myths floating around, how can one possibly know for certain that braces are advantageous, or even necessary? Here are some of the most common misconceptions surrounding orthodontic care

  1. Orthodontic treatment is strictly cosmetic Wrong! Although an improved appearance is the most prominent result of undergoing treatment, there are many other factors that come along with it. Teeth and jaws are aligned, your bite is improved, chewing and speaking are facilitated, and future complications are avoided.
  2. The only form of orthodontic care is braces. Though braces are definitely the most common form of treatment, there are plenty of options available depending on your condition and your budget. Your orthodontist will recommend the best alternative for you. There are traditional metal braces, Invisalign trays, removable appliances, clear braces and even partial treatments. Every case is different!
  3. Only kids can undergo orthodontic treatment. This is a common assumption. However, patients of all ages are encouraged to visit their orthodontist! The ideal age to begin orthodontic checkups is 7 years old, but it's never too late to get that shining smile. In fact, a study conducted by the American Association of Orthodontists found that 27% of orthodontic patients are adults.
  4. Orthodontic care is too expensive. An orthodontist is specialized in treating oral health conditions, so they work closely with their patients to ensure the best treatment plan. The cost depends greatly on the complexity of each case, but the long term benefits are well worth the care.
