Once you have braces on, your entire hygiene routine shifts. Braces act as a physical barrier between your toothbrush and your teeth, making it difficult to reach every spot that needs proper cleaning. However, proper hygiene is essential, especially while undergoing orthodontic treatment. Here's how to do it:

  1. Pick the right toothbrush! There are special kinds of brushes made for cleaning around and between braces. Spindle brushes are good for removing food from tricky areas. You should also change your toothbrush every three months to avoid bacteria buildup.
  2. Do salt water gargles. These will help with inflammation, soreness and cleanliness. This is best after each adjustment, as it will help relieve discomfort and kill bacteria that your toothbrush may have not caught.
  3. Avoid sticky foods. Your orthodontist will give you a list of foods you should steer clear of while wearing braces, as these are likely to get stuck between the brackets or the wire, making cleaning very difficult.
  4. Floss! Just because there is something obstructing your teeth doesn't mean you should stop flossing. On the contrary, you should focus on flossing even better. Make sure to carefully go between the wires and clear any excess food to avoid bacteria buildup.
  5. Mouthwash is a great way to rinse out anything you couldn't catch with your toothbrush or dental floss. It will also help you keep good breath at all times.
